Sarandë — gateway to Ksamil, the Blue Eye and the whole southern Riviera — is the trip most travellers landing in Tirana are dreaming about. It's also the journey where transport choices matter most, because the distance is real: around 280 km, and no train, no domestic flight, and no direct bus from the airport itself.
The bus route (cheapest, slowest)
There is no direct bus from the airport to Sarandë. You first need to get into Tirana (bus or taxi), reach the South Terminal on the edge of the city, and board an intercity bus or furgon (shared minibus). The southern buses take roughly 4.5–6 hours depending on stops, cost the equivalent of €12–15, and run several times a day — more in summer, when they also fill up fast. Total realistic door-to-door time from the airport: 6–8 hours. Fine for backpackers with time; hard work after a dawn flight.
The Corfu ferry trick
Some itineraries skip Albanian roads entirely: fly into Corfu (Greece), then take the ferry across to Sarandë — crossings run daily and take 30–70 minutes depending on the boat. If Corfu flights are cheap from your city, this can be a clever routing. The trade-offs are ferry schedules (limited off-season), port logistics with luggage, and the fact that you arrive without seeing any of Albania on the way.
Private transfer (fastest door to door)
A private car does airport-to-hotel in about 3 hours 45 minutes on the inland motorway route — roughly half the real time of the bus option — with one fixed price for the whole vehicle. Split between four passengers it often ends up close to bus money, and it unlocks the extras that make the trip memorable: a stop at the Blue Eye spring, a break in UNESCO-listed Gjirokastër, or the spectacular coastal road over the Llogara Pass if you'd rather trade an hour for the view.

The honest verdict
- Tightest budget, flexible time: city bus + South Terminal + intercity bus.
- Already flying via Greece: consider Corfu + ferry.
- Everyone else — families, groups, anyone landing midday or later: private transfer. It's the only option that gets you to the beach the same afternoon.
